FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS BY DONORS
In which cases is a femoral head donation possible?
During hip arthroplasty, the patient’s femoral head is removed. In the event of a tissue donation, it is processed in accordance with strict quality guidelines and clean room conditions before it is used for the treatment of bone diseases.
How can I donate my femoral head? Am I a suitable tissue donor?
At the hospital you can complete a medical history form and donor consent. In order to exclude any potential risk for the recipient, comprehensive blood tests will then be performed. Please refer to your attending physician for further information.
Can the donation be done in every hospital?
C+TBA concluded contracts with many hospitals in Austria and Germany for the donation of tissues. Moreover, many trauma and/or orthopaedic departments operate a "local tissue bank" or provide other tissue banks with donor tissue. Please contact us, if you would like to know whether your hospital is a donor centre.
Is every femoral head suitable for tissue donation?
Yes. In general, every femoral head can be donated and used to cure a variety of bone diseases. In order to ensure the safety of the recipient, strict criteria are applied to the use of this donor tissue. Your attending physician will take the final decision.
Is my donation associated with any risks? What is my benefit of the donation?
During hip arthroplasty, your femoral head will be removed, regardless of a donation. Thus, nothing changes for you personally. The only difference is that additional blood tests are performed, the results of which might also be important for your personal health. Moreover, you help diseased people with your donation.
Which blood tests will be performed?
Your blood is tested for various diseases (e. g. hepatitis, HTLV, lues, and HIV) in order to minimise the risk of disease transmission for the recipient.
How will the femoral head be processed after collection?
After the femoral head has been removed, it is sent to C+TBA cooled and under temperature controlled conditions, released for processing, cleaned, and then processed under clean room conditions. Finally, it is freeze-dried and sterilised. It can then be transplanted to the patient.
Which diseases can be treated with the donor tissue?
Donor tissue is used for surgical procedures in the treatment of bone defects. Missing bone substance can be replaced and bone voids filled after removal of cysts or tumours. Major fields of application comprise orthopaedic (spine, hip and knee) and trauma surgery (following fractures), as well as dental medicine (build up of jaw bone).
